From 1968 to 1973 he single handedly established the canon of contemporary folk music his originals didn't perform as well as they could due to personal and market conditons, but subsequent cover versions continue to bubbling up through the charts. Most of Van Zandts life was spent on the road, a hard knock existence that led to a series of drug addictions, alcoholism, and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
