This is a lovely & absolutely enormous Civil War Confederate Spherical 10" iron mortar round, measuring approximately 9. 8" in diameter. A typical mortar shell with 'tong ears' was thinner and lighter than a shell of the same caliber for a gun. The fuze hole is much larger to take the long burning wood mortar fuze. Tong ears (holes); were used for lifting the ball and placing it in the tube so that the fuse would be
