Hermann-Paul, The sentinel of Therese, gouach on paper, c. 1914

“La sentinelle de Thérèse” (The Sentinel of Therese), two soldiers discussing, bears a handwritten note at the bottom “if you feel like sneezing, you will go under the window of the old man who stole a little bread”, signed Hermann-Paul.

René Georges Hermann Paul, known as Hermann-Paul, born in Paris in 1864 and died in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in 1940, is a French painter and illustrator.
Coming from a family of Provençal origin, the son of a doctor, he quickly abandoned scientific studies to enter the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, then the Académie Jullian. From 1890, he produced lithographs in black and white or in color, in the company of Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard.
He worked for several satirical or libertarian works, and shared the ideas of anarchist movements. At the end of 1892, he founded the short-lived satirical magazine La Faridondaine. At the beginning of 1894, he became one of the contributors to the magazine Le Courrier français. He was also an illustrator for the famous magazine L’Assiette au beurre, and for Le Sourire. Thadée Natanson, the editor of La revue blanche, published a collection of his drawings.
After having been a fierce defender of Dreyfus, both in Le Figaro and in Le Cri de Paris, denounced the misdeeds of colonialism, and defended pacifism during the First World War, he turned to the extreme right and his magazine Je suis partout.

At the end of his life, he retired to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
